How to Resolve Discord Audio Cutting Out During a Voice Call

If you encounter Discord audio cutting out during a voice call you can try to completely restart Discord or tune DIscord’s voice sensitivity. Also, you can try to turn off  Echo Cancellation, change the Discord voice channel region or allow apps to access your microphone settings in Windows to resolve this issue. If these solutions still don’t work, you can update your audio drivers or even force update Discord.

Solved: Discord audio cuts out during voice call

Use the following solutions to resolve the "Discord audio cuts out during voice call" issue: 

Method 1. Completely restart Discord

Sometimes, you just need to give Discord a breather and reboot it completely. To do so, follow the steps below.

  1. Right-click on an empty space in your taskbar and choose Task Manager.

  2. If the Task Manager launched in compact mode, make sure to expand details by clicking on the “Mode details” button.

  3. Stay on the Processes tab. Locate Discord in your apps, and then right-click on it and select End task from the context menu.

  4. Now, open Discord again and check if the audio issues still persist.

Method 2. Tune the voice sensitivity in Discord

The person talking to you may have their voice sensitivity too high, causing the audio to cut off on your end. Here’s a quick guide on how to fine-tune this setting in Discord and potentially fix audio cutouts.

  1. Click on the Settings icon at the bottom left corner of your window, next to your Discord account.

  2. Switch to the Voice & Video tab using the pane on the left side of the window. Here, scroll down until you see Input sensitivity, and turn off the Automatically determine input sensitivity toggle.

  3. Start speaking into your mic to determine the right sensitivity. If the bar is in the orange area, Discord is unable to pick up your voice. If it’s green, then the sensitivity should be perfect.

Method 3. Turn off Echo Cancellation from your settings

A feature called Echo Cancellation could play into your audio getting cut out on Discord voice calls and voice chat. Luckily, turning it off is rather simple.

  1. Click on the Settings icon at the bottom left corner of your window, next to your Discord account.

  3. Switch to the Voice & Video tab using the pane on the left side of the window. Here, scroll down until you see Voice processing, and turn off the Echo Cancellation toggle.

Method 4. Change the Discord voice channel region

If you have server owner permissions, you can try to change the server’s location to a different country which may help connectivity. This could solve issues with the audio cutting out if it’s related to your internet.

In a recent update, Discord made it so the voice channel regions can be modified on a channel-to-channel basis. Discord attempts to determine the best region automatically, but you may need to do some adjustments manually.

  1. Switch to your server, then click on the Edit Channel icon next to the voice channel you want to modify.

  2. Stay on the Overview tab, and scroll down to the bottom of the page. Expand the Region Override drop-down menu, and pick a region suitable for your server.

  3. Click on the Save Changes button to finalize the modification and test if the new region works better for your server.

Method 5. Allow apps to access your microphone settings

Windows 10 may require you to manually turn microphone access on for your apps.

  1. Open the search bar in your taskbar by clicking on the magnifying glass icon. You can also bring it up with the Windows + S keyboard shortcut.
  2. Type in Microphone privacy settings and click on the first search result.

Method 6. Update your audio drivers

Ensure all your audio drivers are up to date and intact by updating them using the following steps.

  1. Press the Windows + R keys on your keyboard. This is going to bring up the Run utility.
  2. Type in “devmgmt.msc” without the quotation marks and press the Enter key on your keyboard. This will launch the Registry Editor application.

  5. If Windows can find an updated driver, it will automatically download and install the update to your computer.

Method 7. Force update Discord

In rare cases, Discord is unable to update and maybe stuck on an older version. You can try using the Ctrl + R keyboard shortcut to essentially refresh the application, allowing it to update.

Method 8. Reset Discord voice settings

No luck so far? Try resetting all of the Discord voice settings to default. You may need to set up your microphone again, but it’s a small price to pay for fixing your audio cutting out.

  1. Click on the Settings icon at the bottom left corner of your window, next to your Discord account.

  3. All of your voice settings will be reset to default, allowing you to test a brand new configuration.

Method 9. Reinstall Discord

If nothing has worked, maybe it’s time to uninstall Discord and get a fresh, new copy. Note that some of your settings may be reverted to default when you reinstall the app.
